10-day Endemic Bird tour in Sri Lanka

Day 01– 02,

Arrive at the Colombo airport, and meet us and proceed to Kitulgala directly from the airport. Subsequently we will check in to our Rest House /Lodge for two nights. During our stay at Kitulgala we will visit Makandawa Forest Reserve which is a lowland Rain Forest and other selected sites for birding during our two days here. Species we intend to see will be mostly the endemic birds such as Sri Lanka Green-pigeon, Sri Lanka Hanging-parrot, Green-billed Coucal , Serendib Scops-owl, Chestnut-backed Owlet,  Black-backed Dwarf Kingfisher, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Yellow-fronted Barbet, crimson-fronted Barbet, Red-backed Flameback , Brown-breasted Flycatcher, Dark-fronted Babbler, and Orange-billed  Babbler.  

Day 03 –05,

 

On third day we transfer to Sinharaja Rain Forest and check in to a Forest Lodge for three days. We intend reaching there by lunch. The Lodge is situated in an area very good for birding, and we will be birding in the reserve and other sites as well. During our three nights stay  here we will serch for many bird species of special interest, mostly endemic birds, such as, Sri Lanka Spurfowl, Sri Lanka Junglefowl,  Sri Lanka Green-pigeon, Sri Lanka Hanging-parrot, Layard’s Parakeet, Green-billed Coucal, Red-faced Malkoha, Serendib Scops Owl, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Malabar Trogon, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Yellow-fronted Barbet, Lesser Yellownape ,Crimson-backed Flameback, Sri Lanka Swallow, Black-capped Bulbul, Spot-winged Ground Thrush, Sri Lanka  Thrush, Brown-breasted Flycatcher, Ashy-headed Laughingthrush, Brown-capped Babbler, Sri Lanka Scimitar-babbler, Dark-fronted Babbler, Sri Lanka Rufous Babbler, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Legge’s Flowerpecker, Black-throated Munia, White-faced Starling, Sri Lanka Hill-myna, Sri Lanka Drongo and the magnificent Sri Lanka Blue Magpie will be the highlights.

Day 06,

 

Today after breakfast we leave for Udawalawa.  We will reach our hotel in time for lunch. After lunch we will visit Udawalawe National Park in jeeps in order to observe its wildlife in dry scrub forest,  grasslands and edges of large reservoir excellent for many species of dry zone birds such as Lesser Adjutant, Barred Buttonquail, Orange-breasted Green-pigeon, Sirkeer Malkoha, Blue-faced Malkoha, Crested Tree-swift, Yellow-fronted Pied Woodpecker, Indian Pitta, Jerdon’s Bushlark ,Ashy-crowned Finch-Lark, Forest Wagtail, Blyth’s Pipit, Sri Lanka Woodshrike, Marshall’s Iora, Tawny-bellied Babbler,

Yellow-eyed Babbler, Jungle Prinia, Loten’s Sunbird, Oriental White-eye, Indian Silverbill, Black-headed Munia, Streaked Weaver, Baya Weaver and Ashy Woodswallow .

Day 07 – 08,

 

On the seventh day leave transfer to Nuwara Eliya in the high hills and check in, at a Hotel for two nights and have lunch before birding at selected locations. During our stay here we will be on the looking for highland birds including endemics. On the second day we will also visit Horton Plains National Park. Species we intend searching for are highland specialties such as, Sri Lanka Woodpigeon, Yellow-eared Bulbul, Pied Ground-thrush Indian Blackbird Sri Lanka Whistling-thrush, Kashmir Flycatcher, Dusky Blue Flycatcher, Indian Blue Robin and Sri Lanka White-eye,

 

Day 09,

Today after breakfast we leave Nuwara Eliya and descend to Kandy for one night and check in to a hotel before having lunch. During our stay in Kandy we will visit Botanic gardens and the following day we visit Udawattakele Forest Reserve and search for some interesting birds such as Black-backed Dwarf Kingfisher, Crimson-fronted Barbet, Crimson-backed Flameback, Indian Pitta, Forest Wagtail, Common Hawk Cuckoo and Lesser Hill-myna.          

Day 10,

Today we spend last moments, birding at Udawattakele and after brunch transfer to the airport in time for departure at scheduled time.
